I immediately remembered this car... though it took me 2 hours to find a picture of it.

Now in Purple!

Pictures? BRING FORTH THE EVIDENCE.

Now your yellow with a red stripe picture has been vanished. You're getting close and I'm getting outa here before someone spray-paints my dog.

You can't run now- you knew the risks when you signed up up for this. You think they're not already after you too? Your dog and mailbox are already at risk. No, you're in this for the long haul, bud.

Now- I could see the temp plate stripe having some meaning here, but there is a very clear pattern with the differing sized dual stripe, and it's bigger than I previously believed.

I won't stop until find the truth, nor can I stop until I get enough (unf!).

Thanks man! I'm going to have to see if MagnaGrafik will custom make some for my S30. Well, after I get it running...

THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE

I emailed Evan to see if he can ask someone in Japan. Who knows... maybe some old guy at a car show will know.

PS- They don't use Hueys for that anymore... I think it's mostly modified Blackhawks. You can't hear them until they're right on top of you! Where's the right car when you need it?? 8)

PPS- It seems the characters for "Kari plates" are "仮ナンバー" so it may help you guys in searches. I found a pic of a city bus white with horizontal red stripes, but that's probably just coincidence. No other luck yet.

Those have grey too... hmm.

Another thing that stuck out is that this hako sports a similar thick-and-thin stripe, albeit not diagonal. Could it be a long-lost racecar livery from an S50 Skyline, that was then carried over to the hako? Did the hako serve as inspiration for the possibly later diagonal iteration?

Image

Also similar... double stripes. This seems to be a clone of the famous race version.

I'm probably stretching too far by bringing up Prince racing history, but perhaps there is some lineage there that could shed a light on it.

Getting closer?

Porsche 956... given the popularity of European cars in the 80's I wouldn't doubt some Japanese guys would mimic the livery. Is it based on this Lemans car? Probably not.

I've mashed up kari, 仮ナンバー, nissan, skyline, kenmeri, prince, gloria, suzuka, porsche 956, yokohama, advan, kenwood, etc. in Google image searches and haven't found much.

Someone take it from here?

Looks like it's called "knuckle line" and was popular back in the day (late 70s).

It took me quite a bit of digging just to get to the fact that it's called the knuckle line. Now I really can't find anything that determines its history, except that it may have come from boats/ships, but no firm leads.

The tiniest homage to this stripe on the front lip...

I STILL WANT TO KNOW.

Oh go on then, I think stationwagonguy's head may explode if he doesn't get the answer. Make sure it's an impressive answer though !

Yes, it really bothers me, so please do. lol. That was the point of this- I wouldn't ask if I didn't want to know.

Hint of the stripe there. I know that mask is a character from Shakotan Boogie, but I don't know what significance that has.

I did ask, but came up empty handed. This fad was so long ago people just don't remember it.

But I did find out that in some parts of Japan, it was also called "boso line." So if you do a search with that, it would yield the following result:

http://image.search.yahoo.co.jp/search? ... 4%E3%83%B3

Now what I would have to do is follow each link to scour any write ups on each page.

Hehe,, so I followed one such link, found out it's also called 89度線, or in English, 89 degree line.

It seems that Japanese don't read it as 89 degrees, but instead, fondingly call it "Yakuchan line," because 8 can be read "ya" and 9 can be read "ku" and "chan" is an endearing term. It sounds like a character, could be from a manga or something, so maybe that's where the roots lie. But I'll have to do more digging for that. lol

So if you search with 89度線, you get:

Wanted to make sure I said it before another day passes: Zakira, thank you for your discoveries and efforts in the search! :tu: :P Probably the most comprehensive info I've seen thus far- and the insight on 89 degree sounding like a character name has me wondering as well.

I asked a few other people to physically ask people in Japan, we'll see if they come up with anything. Maybe it really is such a vague thing no one knows for sure, but for it to even be this common makes me believe there's a single source.
