So I finally got around to asking my friend in Japan, who's also into cars, where the hell knucklelines came from. Even he didn't know that's what they were called, but he speculated as soon as he saw it, that it may have come from this manga back in the day where the hero car was a white Lotus Europa with red stripes:
http://image.search.yahoo.co.jp/search?ei=UTF-8&fr=top_ga1_sa&p=%E3%82%B5%E3%83%BC%E3%82%AD%E3%83%83%E3%83%88%E3%81%AE%E7%8B%BC

He thinks there wasn't any real meaning, just that it looked good. He said that people modded their cars with stickers because they couldn't afford to paint, and they could easily change them around.

Shops back in the day, sold scraps of stickers for cheap. Since they were scraps, often not long enough, people may have been creative and just stuck them at an angle. Plus it looked faster at an angle. lol So that was his speculation.

I've seen that Europa before, but once again, going from a single red stripe along the whole length of the car to angled pair of stripes on the side, I don't think it's that straightforward.

Perhaps someone out there just did it once, and everyone else copied, but I'm still curious. I appreciate you asking around though, thank you!

The fact that almost no one now knows how it came about, leads me to believe that there really wasn't any dramatic reason for it, other than looking good. Usually, an important story gets told and retold. But in this case, there's zilch. But we'll see, maybe someone will finally come forth. lol

The stripe is after me. It's crossed an ocean and is headed my way. It comes to silence me, for it knows I have grown closer to understanding it's true origins. And I must be stopped.

It's a Dodge Charger with some bizarre tumors on it... your guess is as good as mine.

Very interesting thread, and 20min of my life I won't get back. But interesting, this is what came to mind when I was reading, wrong colour and doubled up, but otherwise the same Tomei B110 #24
Ok how does and old Nuwb attach a picture?

More stripe! Wondering what the grille/lights are supposed to be from.

I can see some similarity... it's at least angled and placed the right way. What is the racing history of this car? All the pictures and video I can find are recent.

That's more like it ! Samuri & battles and stuff. By far the best, most plausible (and coolest) explanation so far.

My vote goes for tristin Grind. If there was a prize, he should get it :)

Dunno. Same thing happened here, where there's just the shadow of a quote left: viewtopic.php?p=191571#p191571 . Maybe he went to China and was 'disappeared'? Neko.
