With his new Hako in the house, a friend commented recently on JAF badges. I'd never really paid them any attention, except to stick the standard issue adhesive plastic one on my tool box, and perhaps to note the full front grille badges - as opposed to the rear window stickers (there is a placement etiquette) were the domain wing-mirrored oji-san. They seem to show up on cars outside of Japan too, often strangely placed. These days when you join, you get the rear window sticker:

Image

If you pay extra you get the front badge (plastic):

Image

Presumably, if you paid extra on your extra around the 40-year anniversary you could buy the commemorative front grille badge, to either fit to your car or place on your desk on the included very tasteful wood stand (impress your friends at parties!):

Image

Some get a nice aged look:

Image

Rare in good condition, and perhaps over USD500 these days the 1964 Tokio Olympics one is pretty neat (brass & enamel):

Image

No idea if I will fit it or not - not being a right-wing oji-san - but I picked up this nicely aged Tokio Olympics version for a fraction of what it should have cost:

Image

Assume there's more variations out there too. Neko.

Thanks for sharing! The Olympics one is definitely a neat piece of history.

The Olympic badge is very cool. Will have to grab some sort of JAF badge for the Hako in the future...

I picked up one off ebay a few years back in a bit of a bandwagon jumping exercise and I've no idea if its legitimate or not but I do know that its pressed tin plate on a plastic disc. I know this because it came apart one time :?

Anyway, it currently resides on my zed but once it sells it'll make its way onto my Hardtop Galant.

I'm another one who likes a nice badge or emblem.

Here's a couple of JAF-related ones on the grille of my 432R replica project car:

Can we hear a bit more about the "rear window placement etiquette?"

I was hoping no one would ask that. Not sure. But, I think it is lower right corner of rear window. Or it might be lower left corner... Either way, it is one lower corner of the rear window. The back of the sticker used to have placement locations. The JAF website probably has their suggested locations for the countless stickers we have (registration, shrine attendance / blessing, insurance, seat-belts, parking approval, AC gas, etc.) all listed somewhere... One more Tokyo Olympics:

One of my JAF badges, boxed diecast badge with a separate sticker. I have earlier aluminium badges as well but this is the only new one.

Somewhere, there is a thread on an F-body forum talking about old AAA badges.

Cool collection!, really digging the '64 Olyimpic's badge. Makes me want to start my own, unfortunately only standard ones are available here (mostly imported second hand ones).

I bought a few plastic and metal ones before the whole JDM yo thing, picked them up for only a few dollars each. Nobody knew what they were! (I'm guessing they came into Australia on the grilles of old front cuts).

Among my collection of many, I have one of these and to the best of my knowledge these ones are not the real deal. It's a "bubble" sticker on a metal backing. I'm fairly sure the genuine article are only produced as per the original post - embossed style with the domed shape. Unless Neko can confirm otherwise?

The JAF badges are common as hell around NZ, a lot of the used Japanese imports around have them on the grilles so finding them is simple. I had about 20 of them scavenged from wreckers etc at one point.

This is a brand new one, obtained from JAF in Japan by a friend.

Some of those special edition/commemorative ones are just beautiful!

My badge is diecast and certainly not a sticker on a backing plate. There is a sticker with it, underneath in the box. I will do a side on scan to show that it has raised features on it as well. It is most certainly 100% real.

I stand corrected in this case then.

There's a plague of cheapies doing the rounds in the boxed sets as so right now... well, not "cheap" I see poor saps being raped of $70 - $90 for them.

No, it is important if there are cheap copies out there to show potential buyers what to look for. Below are more photos of my badge to help with identification. On the right is the window sticker mentioned in earlier posts.

The bottom photo is the best to show it is enamelled with a thick clear layer over the top.

The eBay cheapies look cheap - wrong color, sizing, and font. Easily picked. The native members get one of four types:
o Flat silk-screened sticker.
o Raised, metalized rear, with clear acrylic overlay sticker (as per below).
o Molded plastic badge.
o Enameled badge.

The stickers are for the rear window (lower right corner), and the badges for front grille (right hand side). Raised plastic:

One more for the collectors:
