Hello all! Ive been keeping up with this site for a while now but this is my first post so bear with me. Anyways, in the past several years I've became a big fan of 60-70's Japanese cars. Last year I ran across a great deal on a 1974 Mazda rx-4 with 26,000 original miles on it for an insanely cheap amount of money( I did have to travel 12hrs to get it though). The car is complete with every piece of trim except for the muffler for which we stupidly cut off and left somewhere in Illinois( it was a bit rusty and it needed to be removed so it could go on car dolly, still I should have kept it.) The car had been parked and mostly covered under a shed since the early 80's. Ok fast forward, my father and I are very ignorant to rotary engines. He has worked on cars all of his life but this is a bit of a different beast. The car runs but very irregular, backfires etc. The carburetor needs to be rebuilt but we can not find for the life of us a "Complete" rebuild kit for the stock 4barrel hitachi. It needs new diaphragms/gaskets, the whole shebang. This is where your knowledge comes in dear community. Do you have any suggestions on websites or other good communities(ones that are not snobs or elitists) that would be helpful. Maybe you guys have some tips on what to look for on how to get an old rotary back to normal. Thanks for your time and I appreciate any info. Take care and good hunting. I've heard of people using the Rx7 nikki if you tap the rx4 intake, add studs for carb to bolt onto etc. more modern with more knowledge, parts etc.

That is exactly what my car has. 13B RX4 manifold tapped to suit the Nikki.

Ditto. The 12A Nikki 4 barrel flows more than the Hitachi unit and doesn't have all the anti pollution
crap hanging off it everywhere. Simple as marking holes on manifold, then drilling and tapping.

I created this photobucket just now( I've never used it before), hopefully you can see the pics. The main thing wrong with the body is hood which I think can be salvaged by a good bodyman with patience. It has a small scratch/dent on the front passenger fender near the bottom. There is also a decent size dent in the passenger side rear panel near the bottom as well. All of the rust you see besides the hood is surface rust. The vinyl top is in amazing condition and so is the interior. Oh and people with good eyes will notice the absence of the mazda nameplate on the trunk but dont worry its in the trunk. One of the better rx4 that Ive seen in original condition with 26,000 miles. I payed less than $2,000 for it.

if you look hard enough, you'll probably find either an exact copy of the rear muffler, a NOS item, or one that's close enough and then you could put on a REAPS tip etc.
