Just found this amazing car in Seattle from a woman who got his car brand new 40 years ago and is the original owner. Amazing condition inside and out with only 87k on the clock.

However, it has the awful 2-speed toyoglide in it which really kills the car.

I want to swap it out with a new 3 speed auto preferably with OD so I can enjoy the car on the highway and not feel like I'm near redline at 50 mph!

What is the latest transmission that will fit into these and bolt up to the 2TC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd recommend just going for the T50 5 spd manny. I feel (personally) that older auto trannys aren't going to be reliable, and if you want highway cruising speeds that 5th gear is going to be essential. Sure, there is a little bit of work w/ clutch fabrication, but then you'll totally have a sweet ride that will get you everywhere. (Can you tell I have a te27 with a 5spd swap?)

Anybody else know much about toyoglides? I don't. I'm speaking from experience with an auto transmission in an 83 mercedes

A 3 speed A40 from a early 80's Corolla should work, those had a 3TC. A A40D or A43D have overdrive but were never used with a T series engine here that I'm aware of. Probably could swap the bell housing from the A40 over to a A40D / A43D.

I would love a 5 speed, but one of the deals that I agreed to with the previous (and only) owner is that I would keep to pretty much stock, in return she gave me the car. So, I could slip a nicer 3 speedOD automatic under the tunnel and who would know.

I'll post some more pics soon, once the weather gets nicer.

3 speed auto for any later model corolla will work just fine. Just make sure you pull the converter out with it as I don't think they are the same.

Amazing car!!! Dont' change a thing on that one.

I plan on leaving her just the way she is, with the exception of the painted trim on the nose of the hood, that I have to changed back to the gray it was.

A few little clean up bits, rebuild the car, replace the bad water pump, a litte detailing and get the wheels painted and some newer tires on it (these tires are from 1993) and she should be good. And fix the cracked dash as well.

I don't like the transmission but I will most likely leave it alone and just drive it like a lil o' lady at 37mph with the turn signal on for miles.

Contact Cabe Toyota in Long Beach about the dash. They have the factory toyota pad there and it's a fairly simple process to get it on the car.

The 2 speed toyoglide is good for about 65mph so you'll probably be fine up in the pacific northwest. Here in So-cal where everyone goes about 90mph it would definatly be to slow. Either way the car is an amazing find. please post up a few more pictures of it.

Before even dreaming about mods like a complicated transmission swap you should tune up the motor to factory specs. This means installing new conventional copper core spark plug set to a .031" gap, set the ignition timing with a timing light, adjusted the intake and exhaust valve clearances, adjust the ignition point dwell with a meter and adjust the carburetor fuel mixture.

Like pertrano said, the car can get up to and maintain 60-65 MPH but if and only if you tune it up to factory specs as described above. You should also put some new TYPE F auto transmission fluid in that old tranny, put new GL-5 80W-90 conventional gear lube in the rear axle and clean and repack the front wheel bearings with fresh wheel bearing grease. Doing all that will reduce the rolling resistance of the car so it will get up to and maintain 60-65 MPH easier.

Nice find...looks legit keep of stock as hell. Who cares if you can only do 50 MPH that's what the slow lane is for...

You just have to host on an external site like imageshack or any other number of sites and then link the url

Carb is out being redone. It was seriously nasty from 3 years of sitting before I bought it.

Amazing find!

FYI the trim under the grill is supposed to be grey also. I would leave the trans also but I would try to source the original grill. The grill thats on now is from a 72 sedan, the coupe grill is plastic not metal.

Thanks for that tip on the grille trim. The upper lip was alos painted and I stripped it the first day I got the car, looked awful. I'll pull the grill and paint the under lip as well the same color to match the light surrounds. And I will leave the 2-speed auto and make the car a prefect original.
